VISUAL DEVELOPMENT
Brief
A visual development project reimagining Flash Gordon as a 1960s-inspired space age children’s animation, featuring logo design and illustration explorations of props and characters that blend retro-futurism with playful charm to create a whimsical, nostalgic take on the classic sci-fi universe.
1.0 LOGO DESIGN
The logo design for this Flash Gordon reimagining draws inspiration from 1960s
atomic age aesthetics and mid-century modern graphic styles. Influences include animated and television logos such as Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Jetsons,
Pink Panther, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and I Dream of Jeannie. The design
explores bold typography, geometric shapes, and playful yet futuristic motifs to
create a logo that reflects the retro-futuristic, whimsical tone of the 1960s space
age while remaining recognizable and versatile for a children’s animated series.

2.0 PROP DESIGN
I explored prop and FX design for a reimagined Flash Gordon world, focusing on a
ray gun inspired by 1960s space-age and atomic-age aesthetics. I drew from googie architecture to create sleek, playful forms with a retro-futuristic feel, and developed VFX concepts such as energy beams, sparks, and impact effects to bring the design to life and enhance its presence within the animated world.

3.0 character DESIGN
I reimagined Flash Gordon through the lens of a child’s imagination, transforming the characters into versions that reflect his inner world. Flash becomes a lanky 8-year-old boy who is bullied in real life but dreams of being an unstoppable hero. Dr. Zarkov takes shape as his clever, sarcastic younger sister, adding wit and playfulness to the story. Ming the Merciless becomes the school bully, a familiar threat reimagined with 1960s space-age flair and playful exaggeration to mirror Flash’s vivid daydreams.
